Black Raspberry Research: Oral Cancer
It was great to see a recent article in DentistryIQ outlining some of the benefits of black raspberries in Oral Cancer. The interview with Dr. Susan Mallory was very informative and outlines a key benefit of black raspberries that isn’t very much talked about. Many drugs have major side effects and issues with toxicity. Black raspberries (applied as a gel in the study mentioned in this article) do not suffer those same issues:
Our BRB gel data imply that locally applied black raspberry constituents can re-direct appropriate epithelial cell growth by removing mutated cells from the overall cell population. Consistent with a food-based approach, no systemic or local toxicities occurred.
It also outlines why contact is so important with cancers of the mouth and throat. This is why using a gel, powder, or extract would better simulate the trials mentioned than a capsule.
